The Owner Perception Gap

77% of owners believe their pet is a healthy weight, yet around half of all dogs and cats are overweight. Only 4% of owners acknowledge their pet needs weight loss, and just 7% know how to correctly assess body condition. 82% have never used a Body Condition Score, and 50% have never consulted a vet about their pet's weight. Overweight dogs lose up to 2 years of lifespan.

The Post-Pandemic Rehoming Crisis

The RSPCA declared a "rehoming crisis" in 2025. During the pandemic, 3.2 million households acquired pets — 59% of new owners were aged 16-34. Puppy prices surged 131% from £808 (2019) to £1,875 (2020). Now, as pandemic puppies reach adolescence and the cost-of-living crisis bites, 70% of surrendering owners are aged 18-35 — the same demographic that acquired most pandemic pets. 15% of pet owners now regret getting a pet (up from 13% in 2023), affecting approximately 2.6 million pets.

When sources disagree, we note both figures or use the more conservative estimate.
