Types of Aquariums

Choosing the right aquarium depends on your space, budget, and the fish you want to keep. Here are the main types available in the UK:

Choosing the Right Tank Size

The general rule for stocking is 1 cm of adult fish per litre of water (for small community fish). Larger or more active species need significantly more space. Always research the adult size and behaviour of your chosen fish before selecting a tank.

Popular sizes for UK homes include 60 litres (ideal first tank), 120 litres (great for community setups), and 200+ litres (for larger species or serious hobbyists). Remember that a filled 100-litre tank weighs over 100 kg — ensure your chosen location can support the weight.

Tank Placement and Setup

Place your aquarium away from direct sunlight, radiators, and draughty areas. The surface must be level and sturdy enough to support the full weight. An aquarium cabinet is recommended as it distributes weight evenly and provides storage for equipment.

Position the tank near a power socket for filter, heater, and lighting. Avoid placing it near speakers or high-traffic areas that could stress the fish with vibrations.
